Hypnotherapy for Pain Management in Cork
Learn to change your relationship with pain.
Living with ongoing pain can affect much more than your body.
It can affect your sleep, mood, confidence, movement, concentration and enjoyment of everyday life. You may find yourself constantly thinking about your pain, worrying about when it will return or avoiding activities because you're expecting discomfort.
Hypnotherapy and NLP can offer techniques to help you work with the thoughts, emotions, habits and responses surrounding pain.
I'm Sabrina Campbell, a Clinical Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner based in Douglas, Cork. I offer personalised sessions in person and online.
Can hypnotherapy help with pain?
Research suggests that hypnosis may help some people manage pain and improve their experience of living with chronic pain. It is generally considered a complementary approach rather than a replacement for medical care.
Pain is complex, and everyone experiences it differently.
The aim of hypnotherapy isn't to tell you that your pain is "all in your head". Pain is real.
Instead, we can explore how your nervous system, thoughts, emotions, attention and learned responses may interact with your experience of pain.
How can NLP help with pain management?
NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming, can be used to explore the way you think about and respond to experiences.
In pain management, this may include working with:
- The language you use around your pain
- Anticipation and fear of pain
- Attention and focus
- Stress and tension
- Unhelpful thought patterns
- Emotional responses
- Confidence around movement and everyday activities
- Relaxation and coping strategies
The aim is to help you develop more useful responses and greater confidence in managing your experience.
What can hypnotherapy for pain management help with?
People may seek support for a range of ongoing or recurring pain experiences, including:
- Back and neck pain
- Joint and muscular pain
- Arthritis-related pain
- Headaches and migraine
- Tension-related discomfort
- Pain associated with stress and tension
- Chronic pain
- Pain that affects sleep and relaxation
- Anxiety or fear surrounding pain
Your pain should always be properly assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional, particularly if it is new, severe, unexplained or changing.
What happens during a pain management session?
We'll begin by talking about your experience of pain, what impact it is having on your life and what you'd like to be different.
I'll then explain the techniques we'll use and tailor the session around your individual needs.
During the hypnotherapy part of the session, I'll guide you into a deeply relaxed and focused state.
We may work with relaxation, attention, imagery, suggestions and other personalised techniques designed to help you develop a different response to pain and the stress surrounding it.
You remain aware and in control throughout the session.
Can hypnotherapy reduce the feeling of pain?
Some people find that hypnosis changes the way they experience or respond to pain.
For others, the biggest benefit may be feeling calmer, less fearful or less overwhelmed by their symptoms.
Your experience will be individual.
The goal is not to promise that your pain will disappear. It is to help you develop more tools and more control in the way you manage it.
What might I feel after a session?
You may feel deeply relaxed, calmer and more aware of how your thoughts and emotions can influence your experience of pain.
You may also leave with techniques you can practise yourself between sessions.
Over time, the aim is to help you feel less dominated by pain and more able to engage with everyday life.
Can hypnotherapy help me sleep when I'm in pain?
Pain and poor sleep can sometimes become a difficult cycle.
You may struggle to switch off because you're anticipating discomfort, or become more aware of pain when you're tired.
Relaxation and hypnotherapy techniques can be used to help you develop a calmer bedtime routine and reduce some of the mental tension surrounding sleep.
They are not a replacement for investigating the underlying cause of ongoing sleep difficulties or pain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can hypnotherapy cure chronic pain?
Hypnotherapy should not be presented as a cure for chronic pain. Research suggests it may help some people manage pain and related symptoms, but results vary between individuals. It should be considered alongside appropriate medical care rather than as a replacement for it.
Is pain really affected by the mind?
Pain is real and is not simply "in your head". However, pain is a complex experience influenced by physical, psychological and nervous-system factors. Hypnotherapy focuses on the parts of the pain experience that may be influenced by relaxation, attention, thoughts and learned responses.
Can NLP help with chronic pain?
NLP may provide techniques for working with thoughts, language, attention and emotional responses surrounding pain. The evidence base for NLP specifically in pain management is less established than the evidence for hypnosis, so I use it as one complementary tool rather than presenting it as a standalone treatment.
Can hypnotherapy help arthritis pain?
Hypnotherapy may help some people manage their experience of chronic pain, including pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions. It does not treat or reverse arthritis itself.
Can hypnotherapy help headaches or migraine?
Some research suggests hypnosis and self-hypnosis may help reduce headache activity in some people, although the quality of the evidence is mixed.
Can I have pain management hypnotherapy online?
Yes. Online sessions are available from the comfort of your own home, provided you have a quiet and private space.
Will I be asleep during hypnosis?
No. Hypnosis is not the same as being asleep. You remain aware and in control throughout the session.
Can I stop taking my pain medication after hypnotherapy?
No. You should not stop or change prescribed medication without discussing it with your doctor or healthcare professional.
When should I see my doctor about pain?
If your pain is new, severe, unexplained, worsening or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, you should seek appropriate medical assessment. Hypnotherapy should complement—not replace—medical diagnosis and treatment.
How much does pain management hypnotherapy cost?
Individual hypnotherapy sessions with Sabrina Campbell are €125.
A free consultation is available before booking.
